Bridges lit from below, and not one engine
The light arrives twice, once from the sky and once off the water, so the undersides of bridges glow and nothing casts a proper shadow. Past the end of the road bridge there are no cars at all, so the loudest thing in a side street is a hand-cart bumping down a flight of bridge steps. Venetians walk fast with somewhere to be, the only defence against being asked the way to St Mark's forty times before lunch.
€90 for half an hour, €7 for the violins
The city sets the gondola tariff by decree: €90 for 30 minutes between 09:00 and 19:00, €110 for 35 minutes from 19:00 to 04:00, up to five people aboard. Split five ways that is €18 each. Alone, it is €90 for half an hour of nose-to-tail traffic in the back canals, and I'd sooner buy a day pass and stand at a vaporetto's front window. Stands at the Molo.
Caffè Florian prints it all on its own menu: €7 an espresso, €17 a spritz, and €7 a head for the music, added to the first order when the orchestra plays and waived for under-10s. The band is live and the room is glorious. I still take my coffee standing at a bar two bridges away.
Two euros, standing up, at the Santa Sofia stazio
The traghetto da parada is a working gondola that crosses the Grand Canal and does nothing else. The fare is set by the city: €2.00, or €0.70 for residents and IMOB holders, in coins into the oarsman's hand as you step aboard. I use Santa Sofia, 08:30–19:00 on weekdays and 09:00–18:00 at weekends and holidays, because it lands beside the Rialto fish market and that is the reason to go early. San Tomà keeps the same weekday hours; Carbon runs 09:00–12:00, Monday to Friday. Locals stand for the crossing.
Nowhere to sit, and that is written down
The city's urban policing regulation bans sitting or lying on bridges, steps, wellheads, monuments, the fondamente and the raised acqua alta walkways, and bans eating or drinking sitting on the ground. That is €100 to €200 and an order to move on. Feeding pigeons or gulls costs €25 to €500, a bare chest or swimwear in public €250, a bicycle even pushed by hand €100. Eat your sandwich standing up.

The Ponte della Libertà, 3.85 km long, stops dead at Piazzale Roma. Prices at the time of writing.
Piazzale Roma is as close as a car gets. The city-owned Autorimessa Comunale, 1,906 spaces, is €35 for 24 hours, €15 overnight from 17:00 to 05:00, booked online by midnight the day before. Next door Garage San Marco is €25 for 5 hours, €45 for 24, plus €10 for the ground floor. Height limit 2.10 m.
Tronchetto, the island one turn earlier, is where I'd send most drivers. Tronchetto Parking is €6 an hour but caps at €29 for 24 hours, and the People Mover to Piazzale Roma is €1.50.
Mestre is the mainland half. Park Mestre Stazione is €20 for 24 hours; the city's Park Candiani is €2 an hour or €12 for the day, with tram T1 from Piazzale Cialdini. A bus or tram ticket to Piazzale Roma is €1.50, valid 75 minutes.
From Piazzale Roma, walk to St Mark's or take vaporetto line 1 down the Grand Canal: €9.50 a single, €25 for a 24-hour pass. Two people returning on singles spend €38, more than a day at Tronchetto: buy the pass.
Two more charges. Central Mestre is a ZTL running 24 hours a day behind eight camera gates; AVM puts the fine at €83, or €58.10 within five days. Then the Access Fee (contributo di accesso): in 2026 it ran on 60 days between 3 April and 26 July, 08:30–16:00, €5 booked four days ahead, €10 after that, fines €25–€150. Overnight guests anywhere in the municipality, under-14s and Veneto residents were exempt. No 2027 calendar at the time of writing; check cda.ve.it before a spring trip.

Towed in Venice: Towed? Read the yellow sticker first
Historic Venice has no cars to tow. On the mainland and the Lido, the Polizia Locale calls a firm authorised by the Prefecture and leaves a yellow sticker in plain view with your plate and the depot holding the car. I'd photograph it first thing.
No sticker, or rain got to it: call the Polizia Locale operations centre on +39 041 274 7070, 24 hours a day. The city call centre, +39 041 041, answers 08:00–18:00.
There's no published central pound or price list. Pay removal and storage at the depot on the sticker before release; the fine comes separately. Fine questions: Via Cappuccina 76, Mestre.

EV charging in Venice: Tronchetto's 40 plugs, San Marco's flat €35
Tronchetto Parking has 40 charging points, up to 22 kW, on level 0, sector B. The cheapest garage by the bridge, and my default.
At Garage San Marco staff charge the car while you're out, a flat €35 however many kWh go in. With a small battery, I'd skip it.
In Mestre, Park Mestre Stazione has 8 points. No charging price is published; check your app.

Free parking in Venice: Park free in Mestre, pay €1.50 to cross
The city runs free park-and-ride lots (parcheggi scambiatori) around Mestre, among them Terraglio A, Miranese A and Favaro A. Then it's a €1.50 ticket to Piazzale Roma.
Almost free: the AVM lot on Via Santa Maria dei Battuti is €1 a day. San Giuliano park, on the lagoon edge, gives you 3 hours free, then €12 for the day.
My favourite: sleep in Mestre. Hotel Ai Pini, Villa Moro Lin and Smart Hotel Holiday all say on their own websites that parking is free, and overnight guests don't pay the Access Fee.
By water, Terminal Fusina is €10 for the first day, with a boat to the Zattere. Punta Sabbioni on the Cavallino peninsula is €9 a day, and ACTV line 14 reaches San Zaccaria, 350 m from St Mark's, in 30–35 minutes. It's the arrival I'd pick.
Free or nearly-free spots
AVM park-and-ride lots (free)
The city runs free 'parcheggi scambiatori' on the edge of Mestre: Terraglio A (Via Borgo Pezzana), Miranese A (Via Miranese), Favaro A (Via Altinia) and more. Then a €1.50 bus or tram ticket, valid 75 minutes, to Piazzale Roma.
Santa Maria dei Battuti (€1 a day)
An AVM interchange lot in Mestre charging €1 for the day. Paid 08:00–13:00 and 15:00–20:00, not on holidays.
San Giuliano (3 hours free)
The lagoon-side park in Mestre gives you the first 3 hours free, once per visit. After 6 hours it's €12 for the day, and the gates shut 02:00–06:00.
Sleep in Mestre
Several Mestre hotels include parking, and overnight guests anywhere in the municipality are exempt from the Access Fee. Two birds, one very ordinary-looking stone.

⚠ The small print on 'free' parking
- Mestre's ZTL runs 24 hours a day, every day, with eight camera gates. AVM lists the fine at €83, or €58.10 if paid within 5 days. If your hotel is in the centre, ask how to get your plate registered.
- The Access Fee is per person, not per car. In 2026 it ran on 60 days from 3 April to 26 July, 08:30–16:00: €5 booked at least four days ahead, €10 after that. Fines €25–€150. No 2027 calendar yet.
- Free lots are unattended. Nothing visible on the seats, and nothing you'd miss in the boot.
- At Tronchetto, ignore anyone steering you to a private motorboat. The local press has reported touts doing exactly that. The People Mover costs €1.50.
- Big events fill Piazzale Roma. On Redentore Saturday Garage San Marco switches to a flat €45 24-hour rate. Book ahead or head for Mestre.
