The light comes off the walls, not the sky
Rome throws its own light back at you: ochre plaster and travertine keep the glare going into the evening, while the shade in a narrow street runs cold. Drinking fountains run all day on the street corners, and Romans fill a bottle from them without breaking stride. Nothing about you will surprise the city; it has watched strangers arrive with the same expression for centuries.
The €18 ticket, and the man in plastic armour
The full ticket for the Colosseum, the Roman Forum and the Palatine is €18, valid 24 hours, and the archaeological park sells it at ticketing.colosseo.it itself. Anything sold on the pavement as "skip the line" is that ticket with a guide bolted on and a bigger number. In April 2025 the competition authority fined the park's former ticket operator and six tour companies nearly €20 million over how base-price tickets reached the public. The men in plastic armour have no posted price either, and the city's Regolamento di Polizia Urbana has covered centurions and line-skippers since 13 June 2019.
Then dinner on Piazza Navona, or the terraces round the Pantheon. A menu with photographs, or a man outside translating it, tells you what you're buying: the table, not the kitchen. I eat where the tablecloth is paper and the menu is one page in one language.

Mercato di Testaccio is where the neighbourhood buys dinner: about 100 stalls, Monday to Saturday, 07:00 to 15:30 at the time of writing. Under the floor lie the remains of a Roman horreum, a warehouse, amphorae still where they were found.
I go between nine and one, while the fish and vegetables still look worth it. At Mordi e Vai, box 15, order the allesso di scottona: boiled beef and green sauce pushed into a roll until the bread gives up, around €6 at the time of writing, closed Sundays. Bring small notes. Testaccio's ZTL is night-only: I'd happily drive here for lunch.
In Lazio the coperto is not legal
Read the bill before you pay. Lazio's rules on food and drink service ban a separate coperto, the cover charge; a servizio percentage is legal, and so is bread, provided the prices can be read before you order. That is regional law 21/2006, article 16, and consumer groups still report coperto lines on Roman bills at the time of writing.
If one turns up, point at it and ask for it to come off. Better still, read the price list at the door first.
Parking in Rome: ZTL gates: attivo does not mean welcome

Holidays are excluded, and the night ZTLs switch off in August. A gate panel reading attivo means the camera is on; the classic mistake is reading it as an invitation.
A foreign-plate fine can legally arrive up to 360 days later, with the rental company's admin fee on top. Electric cars drove in free until 1 July 2026; now they pay for a permit too.
The Fascia Verde low-emission ring runs Monday to Saturday, 24 hours, holidays excluded: no petrol, LPG or methane cars up to Euro 2, no diesels up to Euro 3. Your rental is fine; an old camper van may not be.
- Blue lines: €1.00 an hour outside the ZTLs, €1.20 inside, eight hours €4 outside. Paid Monday to Saturday, usually 08:00 to 19:00 or 20:00; Sundays and holidays generally free, with exceptions in the centre.
- White lines: free, if you can find one.
- Yellow lines: residents and disabled permit holders. Not you.
Pay at the meter or with MooneyGo, EasyPark or Telepass. Install one before you arrive, not at the kerb with a Vespa behind you.

Towed in Rome: Towed? Ring 06 67691, not a taxi
Rome has no single pound: private operators tow for the Polizia Locale to contracted depots, often on the outskirts and not always on a bus route.
Call the Polizia Locale operations centre on +39 06 67691, 24 hours: they know whether it was towed or stolen, and which depot has it. The city line 060606 also knows, but I'd start with the one that never sleeps.
Local consumer groups put the tow at roughly €150–200 plus VAT, plus storage and the fine. For a rental, ring the rental company: the depot releases the car to its owner or whoever they authorise.

EV charging in Rome: Charging by Termini, on Via Marsala
My pick is FS Park Termini Piastra beside the station: 34 EV bays, 24 hours, €3.50 an hour or €30 a day. The small car park at Via Marsala 27 has two bays, but its rate climbs to €9 an hour from the seventh hour: top-ups only.
Rome claims more than 2,000 public charging points. From the east, Electra's 300 kW chargers at the RomaEst shopping centre opened in January 2026.
Electric and hybrid cars park free on blue lines once the plate is registered with Roma Servizi per la Mobilità; with a foreign rental, assume you'll pay like everyone else.

Free parking in Rome: €1.50 at Anagnina, then Metro A in
Park and ride is my answer: ATAC runs about 35 interchange car parks, €1.50 for 12 hours or €2.50 for 16 outside the railway ring, free with a monthly or annual Metrebus pass.
- Anagnina, end of Metro A, is my default: one train to Termini, Spagna and Ottaviano for the Vatican.
- Laurentina, end of Metro B, stops at Circo Massimo and Colosseo.
- Ponte Mammolo, Metro B, north-east.
From 1 October 2026, overnight parking at Jonio, Conca d'Oro and Annibaliano costs €0.80 an hour, and the gates stay shut from 00:15 to 05:15 (02:15 on Friday and Saturday nights). ATAC says others will follow.
A man in a hi-vis vest waving you into a space for €2–5 is a parcheggiatore abusivo with no authority; the Polizia Locale checked around 1,500 such spots in 2025. Don't pay; call the police.

Anagnina park and ride (nearly free)
€1.50 for 12 hours at the end of Metro A. The same line runs to Termini, Spagna and Ottaviano for the Vatican.
Laurentina park and ride (nearly free)
€1.50 for 12 hours at the end of Metro B, which stops at Circo Massimo and Colosseo.
Sundays and holidays on blue lines
Blue lines are paid Monday to Saturday and generally free on Sundays and holidays, with some exceptions in the centre. Read the sign and check the ZTL panel.
White lines
Free, with no meter. Rare near the sights, easier near outer metro stations.

⚠ The small print on 'free' parking
- ZTL cameras don't care that you're lost. A foreign-plate fine can arrive up to 360 days later, with a rental-company admin fee on top. Since 1 July 2026 electric cars need a paid permit too.
- Night ZTLs catch dinner plans. Trastevere and San Lorenzo close from 21:30 on Friday and Saturday, plus Wednesday and Thursday from May to October. Testaccio and the centre close at 23:00 on Friday and Saturday.
- Fascia Verde: Monday to Saturday, 24h, no petrol cars up to Euro 2 and no diesels up to Euro 3. Matters if you bring your own older car or camper.
- Park and ride gates can lock you in. From 1 October 2026 Jonio, Conca d'Oro and Annibaliano charge €0.80/h overnight and stay shut 00:15–05:15 (02:15–05:15 Fri–Sat).
- Unofficial parking attendants (parcheggiatori abusivi) ask €2–5 near hospitals, the Lungotevere, the Olympic Stadium and nightlife spots. They're illegal. Don't pay; call the police.
- Leave nothing on the seats, especially at big outer car parks where the car sits alone all day.
