White towers, hot brakes, and the first hour free
The light bounces twice here, off the sea and off a hundred white towers, until by eleven the Rock looks like a postcard of itself. The air is salt, clipped hedge and hot brakes off the corniches. Everyone is composed and busy, and the only people who look straight at you wear an earpiece.
€14 for a lap, €19 before the tables open
Monaco Tours, the tourist train, publishes €14 an adult and €7 a child of 2 to 10, at the time of writing, for a 30 to 40 minute loop that leaves opposite the Oceanographic Museum and ends there. It stops nowhere: Place d'Armes, the port, the circuit, Place du Casino, home, all through glass. It runs February to mid-November, and ends twenty metres from the car park I already sent you to.
The Casino de Monte-Carlo sells one visitor ticket, €19. Take it in the morning, 10:00 to a 12:15 last entry, and you get rooms with no game in play and none of the €10 Casino Royal voucher, which only comes with tickets from 14:00. Same money, half the building awake. I'd go at two or not at all, and carry a passport or national ID card: driving licences are not accepted at the door.
Friday, one grower, beside the Cathedral
The Rock empties the minute the guard change ends. On Fridays one corner fills again: the Mairie puts a single fruit and vegetable grower on the Allée Saint-Jean-Paul II beside the Cathedral, 08:00 to 13:00. That is the entire market: one van, residents with baskets, nobody selling fridge magnets. I go around nine and carry small notes, because one grower is not where you test a foreign card.
Any other day, the working version is the Marché de Monte-Carlo behind the Casino: growers, florists and producers 07:00 to 13:00, the fixed cabins until 19:00.
Tap a bank card: €1.50, and the day stops at €5.50
A paper bus ticket from the driver is €2. Tap a contactless bank card on the same validator and the same ride is €1.50, with a free connection inside 30 minutes, and one card is capped at €5.50 for the operating day, 06:00 to 04:00. Monapass sells the same single at €1.50, a 24-hour pass at €5.50.
Now the part that costs people twice. The validator blocks €5.50 the moment you tap, and the real total is worked out after midnight. That is the cap being held, not the fare. Don't tap a second card to fix it, and don't buy paper to feel safe.
Parking in Monaco: Forty garages, first hour on the house
The principality has about a thousand metered spaces at €2.40 an hour, most limited to two hours. I wouldn't hunt for one.
The real system is underground: around 40 public car parks with roughly 20,000 spaces, run by the government's Service des Parkings Publics. The 2026 tariff is fixed by ministerial order:
- 0–60 minutes: free
- 1h15: €2.90 · 2h: €7.40 · 3h: €11.90 · 4h: €15.50
- 24 hours: capped at €24
- Night, 20:00–08:00: €0.20 per 15 minutes (not at the Casino car park)
The free hour is where visitors slip up. It's a threshold, not a discount: at 61 minutes you pay for all 61. My rule is a phone alarm the moment the ticket comes out.
Monaco-Ville, the old town on the Rock, is closed to most visitors' cars: only Monaco plates and French cars registered in the Alpes-Maritimes (06) may drive up. Everyone else leaves the car at Parking des Pêcheurs, dug into the Rock near the Oceanographic Museum, and takes the lifts. Vans, mind the 1.90 m height limit. With 79 public lifts and 35 escalators here, I'd leave the hiking boots in the boot.

Towed in Monaco: Towed? Place du Campanin takes cards
If the car has vanished, I'd assume towed before stolen: cameras on nearly every corner, and only a handful of roads out.
Ring the police on +377 93 15 30 15; the same number handles towing and theft. Pay at the Fontvieille police station on Place du Campanin, open day and night, then walk to Parking des écoles de Fontvieille to collect the car.
Bring a card. Removal is €200 for a car, storage is €30 per day, and the original fine comes on top. The fee order starts storage after 36 hours; the government's own web page says 24. I'd budget for 24 and treat anything kinder as a refund.

EV charging in Monaco: Monaco ON: the Prince buys the kilowatts
Monaco ON, the public charging network, is free, with no badge and no app account. Park, plug in, and the kilowatts are on the Prince. Parking is still charged, but inside the free first hour a top-up costs nothing.
The government lists 17 public car parks with charging, around 300 plugs underground, plus street stations. The biggest bank is at Parking des Salines in the west: 100 charging points, with online booking since July 2026. I'd check the YourMonaco app first; it shows which plugs are free, Type 2 and CCS.
Now the catch. Free charging costs the state about €1.7 million a year, and in November 2025 the government said it was studying keeping it free for residents and workers while charging visitors. At the time of writing nothing has changed, so if your route depends on it, check before you set off.

Free parking in Monaco: Pêcheurs for the Palace, Salines for all day
Pick the garage by the sight, watch the clock.
For the Palace, Cathedral and Oceanographic Museum, it's Pêcheurs. For the Changing of the Guard, park there and be on the square by 11:30.
For the Casino and Carré d'Or: Casino, Boulingrins or Métropole. After 20:00 I skip the Casino car park, the one that doesn't do the €0.20 night rate.
For Port Hercule and the market, Condamine. For Larvotto beach, Larvotto or Grimaldi Forum. For a long day I'd drive straight to Salines, take the 24-hour cap and stop doing sums.
Free or nearly-free spots
The 59-minute visit
Every public car park gives the first hour free. Park at Pêcheurs, ride the lift up to the Palace, see the Cathedral, come back down. Doable, if nobody stops for ice cream.
Sunday street parking
Monaco's roughly 1,000 metered street spaces are free on Sundays at the time of writing. Weekdays they cost €2.40 an hour, 2 hours max.
Night is almost free
Between 20:00 and 08:00 most public car parks charge €0.20 per 15 minutes. Dinner in Monte-Carlo for the price of a coffee's worth of parking. Not at the Casino car park, though.
All day? Go to Salines
Up to 4h15 for €11, 24 hours capped at €24, 100 EV chargers, and you can book online.
Hotels with free parking
- Hotels inside Monaco — Monaco. We haven't found one with genuinely free parking. Valet at the smarter places runs around €50 a night. Budget it or sleep in France.
- Riviera Marriott Hotel La Porte de Monaco — Cap d'Ail, France, right on the Monaco border Map. Parking is not free here either (about €25/day when we checked, so no cheaper than Monaco's €24 daily cap). You save on the room, not the car.
⚠ The small print on 'free' parking
- Minute 61 costs you the whole stay. The free hour isn't a discount, it's a threshold: stay 75 minutes and you pay for all 75.
- Beausoleil and Cap d'Ail aren't free either. The French towns next door have paid zones, short limits and fines. "Just over the border" is not a parking strategy.
- Grand Prix season is towing season. Circuit build-up starts in late February and roads stay closed into July. Signs go up; cars go away.
- Free charging may end for visitors. In late 2025 the government said it would look at making non-residents pay. Check the Monaco ON app before you rely on it.
- Leave nothing visible in cars parked on the French side. Monaco itself has cameras on every corner; the hill towns above don't.
