Chamfered corners, sea air, and a shrug
Barcelona is a grid with the corners cut off, and every chamfer funnels air up from the port. In August it arrives warm and smells of fried potato, sun cream and bins waiting for the six o'clock truck. The people serving you are friendly and completely unimpressed: this city has had the Olympics, a property boom and forty million visitors, and your rental car is not news.
The open-top bus and the Rambla terraces
The Barcelona Bus Turístic. €33 at the stop, €29.70 online, two hours a loop, on the streets your car just crawled along. A metro single is €2.90, a T-casual is ten rides for €13 (fares from 15 January 2026). I'd put the difference into lunch.
Terraces on La Rambla. You'll know them by the laminated photo menu in six languages and the man outside asking where you're from. Walk ten minutes west into Sant Antoni and the same lunch costs less and tastes cooked.
Sunday, 9 a.m., Mercat de Sant Antoni
The food hall runs Monday to Saturday, 08:00–20:30. Come on Sunday instead: 08:30 to 14:00, second-hand books, comics, vinyl and old postcards on the pavements around the block between Comte d'Urgell, Manso, Comte Borrell and Tamarit.
Go at nine, before the sun gets on the stalls. Bring small notes: nothing is priced, so you ask, and you can walk away. The B:SM car park under the market comes in off Carrer Tamarit, and this is the one morning I'd drive into town. Finish with a coffee on Carrer del Parlament.
Your bag has a strap. Use it.
Barcelona's pickpockets are professional, patient and not interested in your face. Locals follow the rules without thinking: bag strap round your knee under the table, never on the chair back; phone in your pocket, not face-up; backpack on your front on line 3 between Catalunya and Drassanes; nothing in a back pocket. Same for the car: empty-looking boot, no cable, no coins, no jacket on the seat. Lose any of it and you spend an hour getting the police report your insurer wants.

Running and camera-enforced since 2020, the oldest zone in Spain
The ZBE Rondes covers more than 95 km² between the Ronda de Dalt and the Ronda del Litoral, Monday to Friday, 07:00–20:00. The ring roads themselves are unrestricted, so you can drive around the problem, just not into it.
Foreign-registered vehicles must be in the AMB metropolitan register before entering during those hours. It qualifies if it's electric, petrol Euro 3 or newer (usually registered after 2000) or diesel Euro 4 or newer (usually after 2005). Registration is a one-off €7, and the AMB can take up to 15 working days to answer. I tell people to apply when they book the ferry, not when they see the sign. Cars that don't qualify can buy a limited number of paid daily permits. The fine is €200, plus 30% during a pollution episode. A Spanish rental car is already in the DGT system; ask the desk which label it has.
Street parking is AREA, run by the city company B:SM. Three colours matter:
- Blue (Blava): anyone, Mon–Fri 09:00–20:00. The centre also charges on Saturdays, beach zones on Sundays and holidays. Max 1 or 2 hours. In busy areas it's €1.25/h for a zero-emission car, €2.50 with an ECO label and €3.75/h with no label. A foreign car has no Spanish sticker, so I'd budget for the top rate.
- Green (Verda): residents first. Visitors get 1 or 2 hours at up to €4.25/h. Some green areas charge until 22:00 and on Saturdays.
- Resident-only bays: not for you at any price.
Pay at the meter or in the SMOU app, with no ticket on the dashboard.
Blue bays stop at two hours, so for longer stays I'd use a garage. B:SM's standard rate at the time of writing is €3.90 an hour, as quoted for its Pl. de les Arts and Encants car parks.

Towed in Barcelona: The grúa got there first: five pounds, 24 hours
The Grua Municipal is run by B:SM too. The classic mistake is reporting the car stolen. Enter your plate on gruamunicipal.ajuntament.barcelona.cat first; the information line is +34 937 06 52 50.
All five pounds are open 24 hours. Joan Miró, on Carrer Tarragona between Consell de Cent and Diputació, handles paperwork, as do Badajoz and Vall d'Hebron. Litoral and Castellbisbal only hand cars back.
The tow is €173 for a car. Storage is free for the first 4 hours on the same day, then €2.50 an hour or €25 a day. Paying online buys another 4 free hours, so my advice is to pay from the taxi. The fine comes separately.
Bring valid originals: passport or driving licence, plus the rental contract for a hire car. Collecting someone else's car needs their written authorisation and a copy of their ID.

EV charging in Barcelona: Endolla: 22 chargers that take a bank card
The city network, Endolla Barcelona, is also B:SM's and had 1,035 charging points in January 2026. Without a subscription you pay €0.35/kWh by day in B:SM car parks and €0.49/kWh on street fast and semi-fast chargers. From midnight to 08:00 it's €0.05 cheaper.
Most points want the SMOU app: activate "Charge", pick a rate, scan the QR code. If you'd rather skip the app, 22 points take a bank card, including Carrer de Provença 447 near the Sagrada Família, Passeig de Gràcia 5 and Passeig de Picasso 8 by the Ciutadella park.
On-street charging is limited to 60 minutes for cars, and a car left in the bay afterwards can be towed. B:SM car parks allow 12 hours at the lower rate, so that's where I'd charge.

Free parking in Barcelona: Free after 20:00, nearly free at Fòrum
Come at the weekend. The ZBE is off, and blue bays outside the centre and the beach zones cost nothing on Saturday and Sunday. Check each street's sign anyway.
Weekday evenings work too. After 20:00 blue bays are free and the cameras stop. Green bays can run to 22:00, so read the pole before walking away.
Plaça del Fòrum is my nearly-free pick. B:SM sells a Park&Ride rate there and calls it very low cost. Book online and check the price for your dates. Metro L4 from El Maresme/Fòrum, five minutes' walk away, runs to Jaume I in the Barri Gòtic.
Free or nearly-free spots
Blue bays on weekends
Blue (AREA Blava) is paid Mon–Fri 09:00–20:00. The city centre also charges on Saturdays, and beach zones on Sundays and holidays too. Everywhere else, Saturday and Sunday cost nothing. Read the sign on each street.
Weekday evenings
After 20:00 most blue bays are free, and the ZBE is off too. Green bays can run to 22:00 in some areas, so check the plate on the pole before walking off.
Fòrum Park & Ride (nearly free)
Not free, but B:SM sells it as 'very low cost': a Park&Ride rate at Plaça del Fòrum, then metro L4 to Jaume I in the Barri Gòtic. Book online, and check the price on the day.
Hotels with free parking
- Central Barcelona hotels — Inside the ZBE. We couldn't find one whose own website clearly says parking is free. Aggregator sites say otherwise, and hotel sites usually just say 'parking available'. Ask for the price in writing before you book.
⚠ The small print on 'free' parking
- The 'punxarodes' trick. Someone punctures a tyre as you drive off, then offers to help when you stop, and the car gets emptied while you look at the wheel. In November 2025 Mossos d'Esquadra arrested a gang doing this in Ciutat Vella and Sants-Montjuïc, targeting rental cars and foreign plates. Keep doors locked, and bags out of sight.
- Temporary no-parking signs are real. For roadworks, tree pruning or events the city posts signs at least 8 days ahead, and the tow truck removes whatever is still there. Park on Monday, come back on Friday, find a gap.
- Yellow loading bays (DUM) are for goods vehicles only, Mon–Fri 08:00–20:00, 30 minutes max. There are about 8,700 of them. A car with a suitcase inside is not a goods vehicle.
- Resident-only AREA bays are off-limits to visitors at any price. And in blue or green bays, the ticket buys you 1 or 2 hours only. Buying another one doesn't reset it: move the car.
- The ZBE cameras don't know you're on holiday. An unregistered foreign car on a weekday between 07:00 and 20:00 gets a €200 fine, 30% more during a pollution episode.
